Alpacas make great pets and can bond with their owners. But, as you look to purchase your alpaca, remember that alpacas are herd animals and need companions. This guide to raising alpacas covers food, shelter, and health requirements.

Cost of Alpacas in Illinois For Sale
Illinois has a great variety of alpaca farms. The best listing of alpacas for sale can be found on the Illinois Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association. It has the greatest number and variety of alpacas.
The Suri Network also lists Suri alpaca sales. The Great Lakes Alpaca Association also lists Illinois alpacas for sale. Additionally, Midwest Alpaca Owners & Breeders Association also lists a few Illinois alpacas for sale.

Cost of Alpacas in Indiana For Sale
Indiana alpaca prices range from $100 to $7500.
Indiana has a decent number of alpaca farms. The Indiana Alpaca Association lists almost all the alpaca sales in the state. I only found a few additional sales not listed on their directory.
Higher-bred Huacaya alpacas weren’t listed with prices for me to average out.

Cost of Alpacas in Iowa For Sale
Iowa alpaca prices range between $200 and $14000 for a Huacaya male. There are few show alpacas.
Plus, Iowa has several alpaca farms in the state, but many of the alpacas are not for sale or don’t have prices listed if they are for sale.
The Upper Midwest Alpacas Association didn’t list any Iowa alpaca sales but does cover the state for events and shows. The national directories such as AOA and The Suri Network don’t have any Iowa alpacas listings for sale.
The Midwest Alpaca Owners & Breeders Association does have Iowa alpacas listed for sale. Additionally, there are independent farms not listed in the association that is selling alpacas on their website.

Cost of Alpacas in Kansas For Sale
Kansas Alpaca prices range from $350 to $10,000 in price. Few pet alpacas are available in the state and no Suri herdsire alpacas.
The best resource for finding Kansas alpacas for sale is through the Midwest Alpaca Owners & Breeders Association or Openherd.com. The national associations don’t have any Kansas alpacas listed for sale.

Cost of Alpacas in Kentucky For Sale
Alpaca prices in Kentucky range from $300 to $20,000 for a Suri male. Kentucky buyers can find an alpaca to suit their needs and price range because of the variety available.
Kentucky alpacas for sale are mostly found listed on the Kentucky Alpaca Association. The national associations don’t have any alpacas in Kentucky listed for sale, nor does the Southeastern Alpaca Association, which does have information regarding alpacas and covers Kentucky.
Kentucky is one of the few states that has more Suri alpacas listed for sale than Huacayas.

Cost of Alpacas in Louisiana For Sale
None of the local or national associations listed any Louisiana alpacas for sale. The TXOLAN Alpaca Association covers Louisiana sales, but there are few Louisiana farms. Out of all of the alpaca listed online and in various association directories, none of them listed a single alpaca for sale with a price.
Louisiana alpaca buyers will need to call for pricing or look to neighboring states for alpacas to purchase.
Cost of Alpacas in Maine For Sale
Maine alpaca prices range between $300 and $20,000 for a Huacaya female. Both breeds of alpacas can be found for sale, as well as the various qualities of alpacas.
None of the four local or national associations listed any Huacaya alpacas for sale in Maine.
Local directories include the New England Owners & Breeders Association and the Mid-Atlantic Alpaca Association. Openherd.com also has a number of Maine alpacas for sale

Cost of Alpacas in Maryland For Sale
Maryland has many alpaca farms. The cost of alpacas in Maryland ranges from $250 for pet alpacas to $16,000 for Suri females. There is a plentiful supply of both breeds of alpacas as well as a wide range of prices and breed-quality of alpacas. In addition to the many alpacas listed on the AOA website and the Suri Network’s website, there is also a local association that lists the Maryland alpacas for sale.
The Maryland Alpaca Breeders Association lists alpacas in Maryland and Delaware for sale. It is the best place to find Huacaya alpacas. In addition, the Mid-Atlantic Alpaca Association has a few additional listings of alpacas for sale.

Cost of Alpacas in Massachusetts For Sale
Massachusetts alpaca prices range from $500 to $20,000 for a Huacaya female. Massachusetts has about a dozen alpaca farms, but not all of them sell alpacas. None of the area associations sell Mass. alpacas. The Suri Network doesn’t have any Massachusetts alpacas for sale on their websites. The AOA has a limited amount of alpacas for sale in Mass.
The numbers I was able to get, I obtained by visiting all the farms listed online and getting a current price on the alpacas for sale.

Cost of Alpacas in Michigan For Sale
Michigan alpaca prices range from $50 to $50,000 for a Suri male. The majority of the alpacas listed for sale in Michigan are listed on individual farm websites. There isn’t a great local association that lists Michigan sales. Both of the national associations, AOA and Suri Network have Michigan alpaca sales, but it’s hard to sort by state.
I used both farm listed sales and the national directories for my averages.

Cost of Alpacas in Minnesota For Sale
Minnesota has several alpaca farms and both Suri and Huacaya alpacas can be found for sale or stud services in the state. Alpacas range in price as low as $100. There were few high bred Suris for sale. The only 2 I found were both 100k each.
The AOA has one Minnesota alpaca listed for stud services and the Suri Network has a few Suri alpacas listed for sale in Minnesota.
Otherwise, the best place to find alpaca sales in Minnesota is on the Upper Midwest Alpacas Association. Although the Great Lakes Alpaca Association includes the state of Minnesota, it doesn’t have any sales listed in Minnesota.

Cost of Alpacas in Mississippi For Sale
Neither the AOA or the Suri Network has Mississippi Alpacas listed for sale. There are a few individual farms selling local alpacas. The local association, the Southeast Alpaca Association doesn’t list alpaca sales on its website.
None of the individual farms in Mississippi that are selling alpacas have sales prices listed on their website.
I did find a few sires for rent. The prices to rent a herdsire alpaca ranged from $1200-4500 for a sire rental.
Cost of Alpacas in Missouri For Sale
The AOA doesn’t list any alpacas in Missouri for sale. The lowest cost alpaca listed for sale is listed at $500. The most expensive alpaca in the state is listed at $50,000 for a male Suri.
The most costly herdsire rental is $5,000. A herdsire rental means you get to use the stud to breed to one of your females, but you don’t get to keep him for more than one pregnancy.
The Suri Network lists several Suris for sale in the state. The best local association to find Missouri alpacas is the Midwest Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association.

Cost of Alpacas in Montana For Sale
Montana alpaca prices range from $200 to $6300. There isn’t a lot of variety or many show-quality alpacas for sale in Montana. Some of the ones for sale can be difficult to locate.
The Suri Network lists the most Montana Alpacas for sale that I could find, but the AOA doesn’t list any alpacas in Montana.
Further, neither of the local associations have Montana alpacas for sale. Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies and Pacific Northwest Alpaca Association both list regional alpaca sales, but none of the alpacas are in Montana.
I found 3 Montana alpaca farms that sell alpacas. Most of the alpacas for sale don’t have list prices, but a few of them do. I have used all available resources to average out the costs for Montana alpacas. The highest-priced herdsire is priced at $39,000 and the next is priced at $28,000.

Cost of Alpacas in Nebraska For Sale
Nebraska alpaca prices vary from $300 to $20,000 for a Suri male. Nebraska has more Suri alpacas listed for sale than Huacaya, which is unusual.
Nebraska has a few high-quality Suri farms in the state. There are also a couple of Huacaya farms in the state, but many of the Huacaya alpacas on those farms are not for sale or don’t have listed prices.
I found alpacas listed on individual farm websites, on the Suri network, and on Openherd.
The local associations that cover Nebraska have few alpacas listed. Those associations are the Midwest Alpaca Owners & Breeders Association and Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies.

Cost of Alpacas in Nevada For Sale
Nevada alpacas range in price from $750 to $18,000. There is a limited number of alpacas for sale, and few of them are Suri alpacas.
No alpacas are listed in any of the national or local associations in Nevada for sale. But, Openherd and individual farms do have alpacas for sale.
Like many states, Nevada has more Huacaya alpacas for sale than Suri alpacas. I had a hard time finding any Suri alpacas for sale and couldn’t find any herdsires for breeding leases.

Cost of Alpacas in New Hampshire For Sale
New Hampshire alpaca prices vary from $500 to 100k. The most costly alpaca listed for sale was a Huacaya Herdsire that was listed for $100,000. Few Suri alpacas are available for sale within the state, but there are a number of herdsires available for rent.
New Hampshire has two local associations, but the Empire Alpaca Association, the local association covering New Hampshire, doesn’t list any NH alpacas for sale. Likewise, the national associations also don’t list New Hampshire alpacas for sale.
Openherd has most of the NH alpacas listed that I could find.

Cost of Alpacas in New Jersey For Sale
New Jersey has a number of Huacaya alpaca farms and a few Suri farms. Pet quality alpacas can be found for $150. The highest cost of herdsire alpacas are for sale at $25,000. Openherds has the most comprehensive list of alpaca sales. In addition, the Empire Alpaca Association also has New Jersey sales. There is a
New Jersey Alpaca Community listed, but the website for them continued to come up with malware so it may be hacked and you may want to be cautious using it.

New Mexico doesn’t have many Suri alpacas for sale. Alpacas range in price from $100 to $12,500. I was only able to find one Suri female for sale on all the listings and individual farm searches. If you are looking to purchase a suri alpaca, you may need to check out neighboring states.
The Suri Network, The New Mexico Alpaca Breeders, and AOA may have sales in the future listed. Openherd is another great resource for New Mexico alpaca sales or sire rentals. TXOLAN has some New Mexico alpaca sales listed as well.

Cost of Alpacas in New York For Sale
New York state has a large number of alpacas for sale. Alpaca prices range from $250 to $39,000 for a Huacaya female with amazing genetics. Fewer Suri alpacas are available, which may be influencing the prices of alpacas in the state.
The alpacas for sale aren’t listed on either the AOA’s website or the Suri Network’s site. Instead, you will need to look at the Mid-Atlantic Alpaca Association, Empire Alpaca Association, and Openherd for alpaca listings in the Empire state.
The New England Alpaca Owners & Breeders Association has other local resources, but not alpaca sales.

Cost of Alpacas in North Carolina For Sale
North Carolina has quite a few alpaca farms and a wide variety of alpacas for sale or studs for rent. The price of alpacas listed for sale in North Carolina range from $300 to $20,000. The higher price of the alpacas in North Carolina reflects the quality and many awards won by many of the alpacas in the state.
One of the most awarded, and highest bred alpacas, in the state rents for $7,000 for a stud fee.
North Carolina alpaca farmers have access to the Carolina Alpaca Breeders and Owners as well as the Southeastern Alpaca Association.

Cost of Alpacas in North Dakota For Sale
North Dakota alpaca prices are based on a low supply of alpacas. The prices of the alpacas available for sale range from $1,000 to $8,000. I could only find two alpaca farms in the state so the few alpacas that were for sale weighed heavily on the average price of the alpacas.
I couldn’t find any Suri alpacas in either the national directories or the local associations. The local association for North Dakota is the Upper Midwest Alpacas.

Heavy Duty Water Tank that I use for all of my animals. They don’t crack or break in the cold easily and don’t wear out from the sun in the summer. These are the #1 most important supply I have for my animals.
This Water De-Icer is another critical supply that I use for every waterer. I’ve tried the heated buckets, the fancier water defrosters and pretty much everything else on the market. But these work the best. Hands down, especially when we hit -20 below!
Hoof Trimmers that don’t rust or go dull as fast as other brands. Some of the more expensive options out there have dulled much faster. These will last well if you don’t leave them in the weather.
Organic Feed for when you need a treat. Alpacas are great for grazing and don’t need commercial food, but when you want to give them something nice, this is a great option.
Electric Coat Trimmer that will cut the thicker fur of Alpacas and help them cool off in the hotter summer days. These are a great cheaper option that don’t cost $400+ that the really nice ones cost.
Winter weather can lead to overeating, but this slow feeder helps to slow down your alpacas so they don’t overeat. I haven’t tried this one, but it’s on my list.
